Community Matters Helpers needed
“At BCM you get regular reminders that you are part of something much bigger than just your little patch” – Community Matters Helper.
We are looking for experienced people to give occasional face-to-face support at our Birmingham Community Matters events.
This can be online, in person, or a mixture of the two – depending on how you feel.
You will be helping people with their community groups and projects, so you must be experienced in running small community groups, volunteering, or working within the charity or public sectors.
You must have excellent listening skills. It’s vital that you actively listen to each person seeking help from our surgery, and their reasons for attending. This is so you can work through together what their challenges might be, and suggest possible next steps.
We are especially keen to welcome new Helpers with experience in establishing community groups and charities (setup and constitution), and writing and implementing policies and procedures. Are you a whiz at any of these things? Contact us!

Helping with BCM allows you to . . .
- Make stronger ties in your local community
- ‘Give something back’ without making a big time commitment
- Forge new friendships
- Get satisfaction from helping others
- Be involved with a new and growing charity.
I’m interested – how do I apply?
For an informal conversation about becoming a Community Matters Helper, please send an email to info@birminghamcommunitymatters.org.uk with the subject line Community Matters Helper, briefly outlining your experience. Or call us on 0121 286 8019 (please leave a message if we aren’t able to answer).
After an initial conversation, we will ask you to complete a short application form which details your experience, any areas of specialism, and when and where you would like to volunteer.

Trustee opportunities
Do you have the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm we’re looking for to help BCM make a positive difference to local communities? If so would love you to consider becoming a BCM trustee.
In order to ensure the proper strategic management of its activities, finances and employment of staff, BCM is delighted to be recruiting for trustees to strengthen its existing board.
We’re looking for trustees who have knowledge in one or more of the following:
- Financial management
- Human resources
- Marketing
- Social media
- The private sector.
We also need trustees who are able to represent:
- BCM users, helpers and sectors
- Birmingham’s geography and demography.
We recognise the importance of your own professional development. Resources are available to our trustees, supporting you in the role and to meet training costs.
In return for your time and skills, you will benefit from being part of a small Birmingham charity in its formative years, which has the potential to strengthen communities and create positive change.
